Spanda Inc.

Although, Spanda Inc. is a new organization, we have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time! Our team includes a dedicated Board of Directors, staff, and wonderful community volunteers who follow these guiding values:

Spanda, Inc. was founded as a non-profit organization in 2006 by Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald, a local Cedar Rapids, Iowa optometrist. Spanda means “movement” and its motto is: “it only takes a single idea, a single action to move the world.” Spanda, Inc.’s mission is to combine optometry with other health care specialties to improve the lives of all individuals—regardless of age or personal situations—throughout the world. Spanda Inc. prides itself in partnering with other organizations to further this important mission.

Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald has a strong history of philanthropic work and experience. In 2006, after meeting, Adele Booysen, Communications Director of Empowering Lives International, Dr. Fitzgerald launched the first mission to Kenya, to deliver eye care services.

In 2008, Dr. Fitzgerald wished to expand Spanda’s focus to include her local community. Spanda, Inc. developed and opened Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion, a vision wellness and rehabilitation clinic designed to meet the needs of community members.
