Feeling isolated, depressed, or directionless in life? What can you do for yourself? Here’s a radical idea: turn that question around—what can you do for someone else? Volunteer!
The most healing thing a lonely, lost, or just plain bored person can do is place the concerns of another human being above their own. It’s almost selfish in its effectiveness. Be selfish by being selfless. That’s one of the themes of MORE Than me: Stepping Out of Yourself and into Humanity.
Modern communication technologies can facilitate powerful change for the good in this world, but they can also cause severe feelings of isolation. How do we cope with this paradox? Rediscover face-to-face human contact. How do we learn to put down the iPhone and step away from the computer for a few minutes? How do we get past "me" and "us" thinking and evolve into our one true humanity? Volunteer!
MORE Than me is a moving book of stories about people who discovered that there is so much more to life when they step outside and decide to volunteer. They found themselves by serving others. We are thrilled to include stories from the following people and organizations who have agreed to take part in this project:
- Jeff Lamontagne, Denver - Second Wind Fund
- Tina Bow, California - Simply Help
- Debbie Macomber, Seattle - Warm up America! Foundation
- The Fairy Godmother Project - Massachusetts
- Brad and Libby Birky, Denver - SAME Cafe
- National Sports Center for the Disabled - Winter Park, CO
- Mark Rice, Los Angeles - Taproot Foundation
- Judith Broeker, Boulder - Adventures in Preservation
- Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald, Iowa - Spanda Inc.
- Microsoft Corporation
- Dottie Mann, Denver - Run for Congo Women
- Genora Crooke, Atlanta - Hands on Atlanta
- and many more; 40+ stories of hope and transformation!
The people listed above found fulfillment by actively seeking their inspiration through service to others. Read their stories in More-Than-me.
Find yourself...get inspired—volunteer.
