MORE Than me co-author Eric Mott asks himself a few hard questions after his most recent search and rescue field-training day involving trees, ropes, and snow.
What kind of person gives up an afternoon of watching NFL football to go play outdoors in the wintertime?
A hockey fan?
No!
What kind of person would give up an entire Sunday with family to spend with ‘friends’ in the wilderness?
A anti-social, single, or soon-to-be-single person?
No!
What kind of person admires the health, girth, and strength of each and every tree he or she encounters in the forest?
A lumberjack?
No!
What kind of person would go up and down the same ice-covered slope dozens of times connected to a rope attached to those trees?
A child on a sledding hill?
Maybe but, no!
What kind of person curses sunny days and prays for blizzards?
A meteorologist?
No way!
What kind of person would tromp around in the snow all day until their hands, feet, and brains are numb?
A crazy person?
Yes!
Search and rescue volunteers: the few, the proud the frost-bitten.
I should probably dry out my gear one of these days...
